Fitness:

The previous Middle School office area located in the Northeast High School has been repurposed into a more than 4,000 sq. ft. weight conditioning facility.  This has provided more space, opportunity and safety for Norris Students to gain strength, confidence and self esteem while gaining an education.  Although it is in use, the project is only 50% complete.  The Weight facility consists of free weights including dumbbells and kettlebells, plyometric boxes, speed equipment and dual rack systems.  A 20 yard turf area provides a place for plyometrics and agility.

The district wants to convert this into a state-of-the-art strength training and aerobic conditioning facility. The proposed fitness center renovation would nearly quadruple the existing space available for this critical area.

What it offers:

The Fitness project consists of a weight facility and cardio room. The weight facility has the room and a need exists for more weight equipment and technology to improve instruction, learning, safety, increased enrollment and technology. The Cardio room is in need of cardio equipment, safety items and technology.

How it helps:

The two rooms dedicated for improving the health, self esteem, well-being and athleticism of our students are classrooms  first and foremost!  We currently serve a few more than 130 students during the day and up to 50 before and after school.  According to our student population over 60% (most seasons a lot more)  of our student continually participate in activity based activities including: Musical, Marching Band, Flags, Athletics, etc… Our current enrollment is over 650 and therefore we needed more space and equipment to facilitate the needs of our students. Completely furnished rooms would better serve a greater population of students and therefore the success of our programs.

Public Use:

The goal is to complete the weight and cardio facilities so that it can be utilized by the public outside the time frame of student instruction and use. In order to get to this point, we must make it secure with cameras and keyless entry. This is a need that we are not able to complete at this time unless we receive more funding.

Next Steps:

We need to continue and add resources in these rooms to meet the needs of our students. Currently we turn students away when we have met the capacity of the equipment.  We set priority on serving all our students  and providing the best opportunities to grow in a healthy and positive environment.

The "dual rack" system allows for multiple groups working one station at the same time. These provide more opportunity to work and avoid having kids stand and wait. The new racks have the latest in safety to provide for a safe environment when used properly.

The "dual rack" system has a bench that can be easily moved with one hand and rolled into place. Multiple exercises are then capable in this system. Here a student is performing dumbbell rows to improve back strength and stability.

An example of how our weight room is meeting the needs of all students. Both Male and Female students work to improve strength, stability, confidence and athleticism.
